My curiosity about clay is no different from my curiosity about nature. In an attempt to merge the two I decided to see how much clay I could remove from a piece and have it maintain its integrity through firing. These lanterns were the result, pierced and excised with botanical designs. The surprise was that when the lanterns were lit with a bulb or candle they cast shadows that very much reminded me of the dappled shade created by the sun shining through the forest canopy. The votives came later. Pierced just enough to emit light they take the form of a bud.
